Tax Exemption for Hotel RoomEmployees of U.S. Government agencies traveling on official business and hold a Centrally Billed Account (CBA) card are exempt from state and local hotel taxes. Anyone claiming a hotel tax exemption must provide a completed “Georgia Sales or Use Tax Government Certificate of Exemption Form” at the time of check in. Hotels must keep a copy of the signed certificate to show why tax was not collected. Federal Employees traveling on government business must present a valid government ID Card and a copy of the certificate in order to be considered for tax exemption.
Per the GA Department of Revenue the following criteria must be met for Federal Employees:
- State of GA Certificate of Exemption (ST-5) form must be completed in full and presented at check in for 8% Sales Tax to be exempt.
- State of GA Occupancy tax exemption form must also be completed in full and presented at check in for the 8% occupancy tax to be exempt.
- Guest must pay with Govt. appropriated funds in the form of a govt. check or govt. issued credit card. Credit card prefixes must be under the “travel” guidelines and it must be a CBA. IBA’s will be held liable in the event of an audit if a ST5 is turned in.
- Only Federal Employees can be exempt of the hotel/motel $5 fee but they must meet the Sales Tax qualifications listed above.
